Hurricane Irma was still carrying lots of momentum by the time it got half way through Florida and although it degraded to a tropical storm by the time it reached Georgia, predictions for our county were winds up to 65 mph and strong thunderstorms with possible tornadoes along the north/east quadrant of the path. However, there was a unique piece of weather coming into place. A huge wedge of cold air was pushing down from the north. Our normal mid to high 80s temps had been moderated down to the low 70s. This cold air ran smack head-on into Irma and removed all threats for severe weather (storm & tornado wise). It was only 61 on Monday. I think it contributed to what ended up to be only moderate rainfall. Another aspect at play is the coincidental positioning of our house geographically. We are at the north end of the lake and down in a depression and often times weather skirts us. You can see the very high winds in the trees, yet not a leaf moving on my driveway. We have friends that live north of us at a higher elevation and they had lots more downed trees.
